Second hand Sunday April 13th, 2014

The term “second hand” refers to the ticking hand on a clock; it also describes re-used items. Would you rather save time? Or save stuff? This film examines the imbalance and waste created by these modern obsessions. Made by Isaac King, this short is a winner of 9 international festivals. The technique was a mix of stop-motion and 2D drawing in Flash, combined in AfterEffects.

Stunning newwork of Carlos Lascano (Argentina). Live action combines with animation, the latter playing small but very important role. This short completes the trilogy started in 2008 (together with A short love story in short motion and A shadow of blue, we’ve published these earlier as part of bigger post about Carlos Lascano works). See also a short interview with author about his latest work.

Kuroko Thursday March 27th, 2014

Kuroko are stagehands in traditional Japanese theatre, who dress all in black. In kabuki, the kuroko serve many of the same purposes as running crew. They move scenery and props on stage, aiding in scene changes and costume changes. They will also often play the role of animals, will-o-the-wisps, or other roles which are played not by an actor in full costume, but by holding a prop. Kuroko wear all black, head to toe, in order to imply that they are invisible and not part of the action onstage. Graduation work of Haruka Suzuki (Kanazawa College of Art) places kurokos in modern world and presents them as unseen part of everyday life.

Cinematic Saturday February 22nd, 2014

Cinematics is a timeline of classic films and characters. It’s a experimental project made by Pier Paolo, an animator and designer from Brazil, in his spare time. Check the complete project. All the sound was made by Marcelo Baldin (combustion.ws). He did a fantastic job remixing famous movie themes and blended altogether with a pinch of Aphex Twin’s Donkey Rhubarb.
